Cedarburg Mid-Century Modern Home on the River

At PEA Builders, we had the opportunity to partner with homeowners in Cedarburg who were ready to build something truly special. They envisioned a Mid-Century Modern home that would stand out for its style and be as energy efficient as possible. After connecting with us through a referral, they shared their ideas for a house that could take advantage of their riverfront setting while supporting a sustainable way of living.

Designing for Style, Views, and Sustainability

The clients wanted a Mid-Century Modern style that embraced passive solar design, but the best views were to the north. To make it work, we placed most of the windows along the north side and added south-facing clerestory windows to bring in sunlight and warmth. This not only supported passive solar gain but also opened up the living spaces, strengthening the connection to the outdoors.

The property had no existing gas or electric service at the road, so we helped the homeowners in the decision to go all-electric. We brought in 320-amp power from Cedarburg Light and Water, which allowed them to install a geothermal heating and cooling system, a heat pump water heater, and multiple EV chargers in the garage. The garage roof, sloping to the south, holds a 10kW solar array that helps the home achieve net-zero performance.

Inside, the main living areas were designed on the first floor to create a comfortable layout that can adapt as their family grows. A lower-level kids’ space provides flexibility over time. Throughout the home, we used our Tier II wall system, a spray foam hot roof, and triple-pane tilt-turn windows to deliver exceptional comfort and performance year-round.
